Trolled By Bathroom Bill Bigot

So . . . I got trolled by this female Facebook “friend” on my recent FB post about the governor of NC being a weenie over the HB2 transgender bathroom issue. I don’t know her well. She seems to be a nice person up in Wilmette, doing good things for her community. I usually reserve my name-calling for public figures. But in this case, I don’t mind calling her a bigot, because she called me a moron and an idiot.

We DO like our drive-by shootings in this country, don’t we? Or if we don’t have a gun, we drive by with our finger out the window, or we pull up next to someone at a stop light and give them an evil stare and hope that they don’t have a gun.

The Illusion Of Superiority

That’s what online trolling is — a kind of drive-by shooting. We don’t have to explain ourselves. We don’t even have to know the person. We just say mean things to people of no consequence, and then we move on with our day. It gives us a brief ego boost, the illusion of superiority.

More importantly, this person’s exclamation belies a willful ignorance characteristic of the problem in NC. Gender identity is a complicated subject. It’s not as simple as, “Me Tarzan, you Jane!”

Furthermore, there are many different kinds of Tarzans and Janes. Masculinity and Femininity encompass a broad spectrum of preferences and impulses. There is no one type of man or woman by which to measure our worth as men and women.

Lastly, this issue is not really about a woman’s fear of peeing next to a man. Heaven forbid this woman should travel by bus through Europe! Nobody is pro-pervert, anymore than anybody is pro-abortion or pro-gun-confiscation. This is yet another manufactured scandal by the paranoid right.

Guys, it’s time to stop worrying about the monster under the bed, and start addressing our real problems.
