The Bible Says . . . Pretty Much Whatever You Want It To Say

Christian Swingers: First they pray together; then they lay together!

I love the Bible. I spent a good part of the second decade of my life reading it cover to cover, again and again.

What I don’t like, however, is people who use the Bible (or any sacred text) to justify their behavior. Why? Because it doesn’t justify anything. Your Bible is not my Bible; and your interpretation is not my interpretation. It’s a book that is intended to inspire love and justice; not an encyclopedia of sound bites to explain your behavior, after the fact!

I was raised in the great TV-Evangelical movement of the 60s and 70s. Since then, I’ve seen several well-known ministers — people I’ve either known personally or through family connections — get filthy rich from their congregations, live extravagant lifestyles and then use the Bible to justify their questionable behavior. I’ve even seen one of these guys use the Bible to justify his mistress.

If you wanna get rich on donated funds, do so. But quoting Scripture after the fact is like spreading perfume on manure. And if you wanna have a mistress, you don’t have to tell me that Solomon had 3000 wives and concubines. I already know that.

The Book of Ecclesiastes, supposedly written by Solomon, seems to suggest that the man, in his old age, had a few regrets. Maybe his isn’t the best example to follow.
